Garments that state "machine wash" can withstand the wash/rinse cycles. These are typically more durable clothing as well and tend to last longer. Be sure to wash only using the temperature indicated (hot, warm or cold). Using warm or hot water on some garments will cause them to shrink or fade.
Some care labels will state to "wash separately" or "wash with like colors." This means the item may fade onto clothing that is of lighter color. If in doubt, wash the garment independent from other items for the first few washes to be on the safe side. Also, beware of white socks and underwear....these can fade too if accidentally thrown in the wash with new dark clothing.
Instructions for Drying
If a label states to "tumble dry" then this means the item can be placed in the dryer. The temperature may also be indicated as low or medium heat. If no temperature is given, then you can dry at any temperature. Shrinkage can occur with some garments if dried on a high setting. If it's 100 percent cotton, rayon or another delicate material, dry on low or medium heat to be safe. Some items can only be placed in the dryer on fluff or air dry setting to freshen the item.
For labels that state "dry flat" you'll need to lay the garment flat on a horizontal surface while drying. These instructions are often included on sweater labels because sweaters will stretch out of shape if hung to dry. Other items can and should be hung out to dry.
Bleach Instructions
Bleaching is popular to keep white children's clothing as white as can be. If no bleach instructions are given and the item is entirely white, then you can use any type of bleach. Some labels might indicate to use non-chlorine bleach only. This means only color-safe bleach should be used to prevent fading. Some labels prohibit bleaching entirely with a warning "Do not bleach!"
Iron as Instructed
Ironing instructions may also be included on a children's clothing care label. Girls clothing especially should be ironed for your daughter to look her best. Boys clothing, however, is often just fine if thrown in the dryer, with the exception of dress clothes. Label instructions for ironing might state whether to iron on a high or low temperature setting, or whether or not to iron at all. Irons can damage some types of material, so read the label to be sure.
Dry Clean Only
Some brand name children's clothing may need to be dry-cleaned. If a label states "dry clean only" this means you'll have to pay a dry cleaning service to clean the item. This can be expensive so think carefully before purchasing children's clothing with this on the label. Some items can be either dry cleaned or machine-washed, if it doesn't say, "Dry clean only."
Use these as a guide to determine what type of brand name children's clothing will best suit your needs. Avoid clothing that will be a lot of trouble to care for if you're already pressed for time each week. Also, buy clothing material that offers the flexibility and durability needed for your active child.
