While many organizations will be happy to accept your donation of a car, few can say that your car donation will feed homeless children in America. As a donor, you should be aware of the projects your charitable giving supports. When you make your car donation to a USA charity that helps children, you know your donation will make a difference.
Between five hundred thousand and two million children in the United States are homeless at some time during year. While definitive statistics are lacking, experts who study homelessness and children's welfare find that homelessness among children is increasing in rural and in urban areas of the United States. These new homeless children and their mothers are likely to be suffering financially because of job loss, domestic violence, high housing costs, decreased government and social supports, and economic recession.
Homelessness impacts the health of children. Being exposed to the elements and lacking clean and safe sleeping and eating quarters, they are subject to a variety of illnesses. Common health issues among homeless children include respiratory tract infections, skin ailments, asthma, digestive problems, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, homeless children are sick at twice the rate of other children.
And it's not just their physical health that suffers. Their homelessness puts them in situations where they are likely to be traumatized by being victims of violence and by witnessing violence. More than one-fifth of homeless preschoolers have serious emotional problems. Homeless children are twice as likely to repeat a school grade as are other children. Homeless children have twice the rate of learning disabilities as non-homeless children. All too often homeless youth earn their living through pornography, prostitution, or the illegal drug trade-the only avenues available to them for making money.
Over one in fifty children in the United States are homeless for at least some part of the year. Everyone wants to help children, and homeless children are certainly in need of help. But donating money to charity is difficult these days, as many people are struggling financially. Car donations give people who want to help a way to do it. Rather than sending a clunker to the junkyard or accepting bottom dollar on a trade in, people who want to help homeless children can donate their vehicles to worthwhile charities. When they donate their car to charity they get the satisfaction of knowing they are helping and they get a tax deduction for their charitable contribution.
It's very easy to donate a vehicle. Most charities that accept car donations also take trucks, motorcycles, RVs, and vans. Some even accept boats and trailers. Many organizations can arrange for free pickup or towing, depending where the car is. The vehicle does not even have to be in working order. The charity will sell the vehicle and use the proceeds to fund charitable programs.
Without taking any money from their pockets, people who want to help homeless children can make a difference by donating their vehicles to charity. It's a great way to lend a hand without emptying your pockets.
