June is the ultimate pool party month. There are so many occasions to celebrate - graduations, Father's Day, the first day of summer and Memorial Day. If your in-ground or above ground pool is just waking up from a long winter's nap, getting it into shape for a pool party goes hand in hand with your annual swimming pool maintenance. Even if your pool is open year-round, or has been open for weeks, you should put some extra thought and work into preparing your swimming pool before a party and cleaning it after the party. These swimming pool maintenance tips can help you prepare your pool to host passel of celebrating folks.
Before the Party - Check and Adjust Pool Chemicals for Balance
Making sure that the pool water is at the proper pH balance will both ensure that swimmers are comfortable the day of the party and help prevent problems a full-blown algae bloom after the party as a result of the influx of people in the water. Check the pH level in the pool three to four days before the party. This will give you plenty of time to make major adjustments without running into party day. The pH levels should be between 7.2 and 7.8, and the chlorine concentration should read between 3 and 5 pm. Make adjustments as needed to get to those readings. If the water isn't crystal clear, you may need to shock the pool. Starting early gives the extra pool chemicals time to dissipate before party day.
If your filter hasn't been cleaned recently, give it the full treatment. Empty and clean the skimmer basket and the pump strainer basket, and check the pool cleaner bag and any other filters in your system. Turn on the pool pump and let it run for a few hours to make sure that everything is working correctly and you have good water circulation.
The day before the party, check the pH and chlorine levels again. If you've followed the steps up to now, you shouldn't have to do any more than make minor adjustments to make sure that the water is within safe, comfortable ranges for swimming. Don't add any pool chemicals the day of the party if you can help it. Run the filter overnight or for a few hours the morning of the get-together, but for safety's sake, turn the main filter off while there are swimmers in the pool.
After the Party - Help Your Pool Recover with Pool Shock
Once all the swimmers are out of the pool for the day, remove all pool toys from the pool and check the filter skimmer basket to make sure that no toys managed to get into it. Put the pool cleaner back into the pool and turn on the pool filter. Give the pool a shock treatment, following the instructions for the pool chemicals that you're using. Run the filter for up to 8 hours to help get your pool back to normal quickly.
Regular swimming pool maintenance is important to keep your pool in good shape for the summer swimming season, but special occasions call for special measures. Following these instructions will ensure that your pool survives your pool party with minimal extra care.
